Settled by people from the south, so it bears strong cultural relations with southern. Unique mesopotamian city on the outskirts of the mesopotamian heartland. Site first inhabited in the 3rd millennium. Mari is always a part of mesopotamian history, but more on the sidelines. According to the sumerian king list, mari was the 10th seat of kingship after the flood. Most prosperous period is during the political fragmentation of the early 2nd millennium. Colony of some sort that results in the fusion of southern mesopotamian culture and local syrian culture. Architecture seems to be more what we see in the north in later years. Mari played a small part in the early bronze age. Becomes important in the old babylonian period. Zimri-lim was king of mari from about 1779-1757 bc.
