Runs command but with its standard output redirected into the file file : cmd1 | cmd2 . Standard output of cmd1 connected into the pipe and standard input of cmd2 connected as to come out of the pipe. Command performs some successive transformation on the data: example: given a text file called faculty of department faculty members. Sort -k2 faculty : sorts by last name instead of first name.
