Prof: We got a couple presentations on program choices before we start.
Speaker 1: Most of you are first year students and the beginning of this coming week is to select
what major you want to be. There’s a new program in Plant Biology. This is the exploration of
the world of plants and fungi and how they can be used to address global challenges. You are
obviously wearing some plants or ate some plants this morning. You may not know that the
variety of added products can be generated from plants through engineering.
Speaker 1: We believe that plants that can help us fight problems in humanity. We face lots of
issues of contaminated soil and water. I want to encourage you when you’re making your subject
post selection to think about being an e-student which is an environmental student. Most of you
are already on the way to achieving that from the first year studies.
Speaker 1: Environmental science explores the chemical and physical nature of the world.
Biological Science focuses on life and the properties of living organisms in the world so a double
major graduate that has a foundational knowledge of how life and physical world exist in
harmony.
Speaker 2: I’m with the department of Environmental Sciences. If you like the outdoors,
consider environmental sciences because you’ll probably enjoy it. Students have an option of
combining majors. What I really want to do is highlight specialist programs. They put a little bit
of everything depending on which program you choose. A new program we started a few years
ago is a combined program only for people enrolled in the specialist program only. If you want
to practice environmental science, you need to be certified by the Association of Professional
Geoscientist. To practice it, you need to be certified as a Professional Geoscientist.
Speaker 2: All of our specialist programs have been credited by a national organization. Those
who want to pursue a graduate degree, you can look our department’s website. Mariano is my
name and you can find me on the environmental website if you have any questions.
Prof: Do something you’re interested in and that’s going to carry you through your career. You
might also want to have a quick look at Chapter 15 because there might be bits that can be
helpful on your final exam.
Environmental Scientists…
- There are a lot of activists who don’t have a lot of environmental backgrounds so we
need to let people know the basics
- Piezometer: it’s an observation well that has been drilled down from the surface
