Uniformitarianism: using present day conditions to interpret the past. Western side of north american plate pushed under caribbean plate, which is pushed against the cocos plate, which pushes down nazca plate, south american plate pushes caribbean and nazca plate down, Pacific plate pushes down cocos and nazca, forms arc.
