EESA06H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Oceanic Crust, Accretionary Wedge, Continental Crust
Document Summary
Lecture 5 how oceans die: the pacific rim from new. Zealand to japan to alaska, california & chile. The most dangerous place on the planet: the paciic rim. Pyroclasic volcanoes: steep sided volcanoes due to chemistry. Magma contains: silica, thus sifens to the gasses cannot come out. During massive erupions: a lot of stuf is blown up into the air (sudden release of gas pyroclasic debris) produce a lot of ash. Clasic means: to break (break magma due to erupions) How oceans die: the pacific rim of fire. Deepest part: trenches (blue line that is surrounding the ring) Trenches mark: loor of the paciic ocean which is being pushed down by the surrounding land marks trenches idenify subducion zones. Take home message: the coninents of the surrounding rim are growing, in expense of the oceanic crust which is being subducted gets melted and the magma erupt along the coninents and become part of the coninents.
