Continental drift versus plate tectonics: continental drift (1910) is the idea that the continents move around. Plate tectonics: continents lie on plates, and it is the plates which are moving. The key discovery during the 60s was the development and application of geophysics: ability to map remotely what is underneath oceans and ground, using electromagnetic waves (which penetrate the depths and then bounce back). Tuzo wilson: looked at all this geophysical data and realized that the earth"s surface is broken down into a # of plates, and plate tectonics. Go back in time to that of shakespeare. New maps of globe were being developed due to world trade going on. Bacon in 1610 realized that you could fit europe and africa with the coastal lines of the americas. Alfred wegener came along in the 1900s and said the same idea. Geologists use the term laurentia to refer to n. america in the past i. e. ancestral n. america.
