Recall: el ni o is the oceanic circulation of the enso (el ni o- southern oscillation) while the. Southern oscillation is due to the atmospheric condition of enso when the trade winds weaken. Hurricanes: tropical cyclones that are initiated by tropical storms in tropical latitudes (0-25 degrees north and south). In western pacific areas such as china, hurricanes are referred to as typhoons . A tropical storm starts when the wind is strong enough 18 meters per second - 30 meters per second. If it exceeds this it is considered a hurricane (with sustained winds that range from 33 meters per second to 50 meters per second). Hurricanes with winds that exceed 50 meters per second is known as a major hurricane . (notice that the definition of a hurricane is dependant on the wind speed and center pressure). Saffir-simpson scale: a scale that ranges from 1-5 that is used to classify hurricanes.
