Cigarette smoking causes lung/mouth/throat cancer, heart disease, and pulmonary diseases like emphysema. 21% of deaths in canada in the last decade were smoking-related. In an effort to prevent smoking, provincial and municipal laws ban smoking in certain areas, and apply taxes to cigarettes. Canada graphic images are placed on cigarette boxes. Image-based warnings are more effective than text-only messages. They also discourage non-smokers and teens from smoking. One reason that young people smoke is that they are exposed to friends and family and smoke; even media characters. They may even associate it with traits such as individualism and attractiveness.
