EESA10H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Water Scarcity, Aquifer, Human Body
Document Summary
Waterborne hazards and human health: liquid natural capital. Earth is a water planet (71% of the earth"s surface) Human body is made of water (60-70%) Mostly salt water (can"t be consumed by humans) Turning salt water into fresh water is an expensive task. Moderating climate (by the sea, mild winters and summers) Water can transport and move chemicals and other pollutants to other places: world problems. Quantity of water (do we have enough water) Only 2. 6% is fresh water (while only 0. 014% is readily available) Ground water (mostly rural areas use this source) Water stress in: north africa, middle east, majority of us and south. Largest rivers are fat from agricultural and population centres. Lots of precipitation arrives during a short period but cannot be collected and stored. Use about 54% of the world"s reliable runoff of surface water and could be using 70-90% by 2025.
