EESA10H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Mikhail Gorbachev, Nuclear Winter, Edvard Munch
Document Summary
Nuclear winter temperatures would get below freezing even in the summertime which would kill all the crops and produce a global famine: brian tin and rich turco invented the term nuclear winter . When it goes off, it is like bringing a piece of the sun to the surface of the earth for a fraction of a second. Everything nearby catches on fire the smoke from the fires go up to the atmosphere and block out the sun. It is much less than 1% of the current nuclear arsenal we use. 20 million people would die from the direct effects of the blast, reactivity and the fires. It would produce 5 million tons of smoke which will spread around the world and locked up in the upper atmosphere into the stratosphere. If the smoke went in the atmosphere, it would rapidly plummet the temperatures to below little ice age changes.
