EESA10H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Clostridium Botulinum, Botulism, Pyrethrum
Document Summary
Nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous are the common fertilizers we add to the soil. Potassium does not have a great impact hence we do not worry about it. Nitrogen fertilizers are the ones we are most worried about. There is nitrate in the fertilizer (no3), then in the soil/water, no3 converts into nitrite (no2) no2 is the toxic form. Nitrites in water change hemoglobin to form that cannot carry oxygen causes methemoglobinemia (blue baby syndrome) in young infants. Pesticide is the chemical used to kill pests. Pests has different definitions for different people it is not a biological category but rather a cultural one. All pesticides have active ingredients= the one intended to kill the pest; the ingredient is toxic. There are different types of pesticides, for example: Insecticides; kills insects that feed on the crop. They are used on crops, and it can be inorganic or organic compounds.
