Document Summary

Some risks are so small that they are often neglected; risks can be quantified in numbers. Risks can be expressed as a possibility or as a probability of suffering harm from a hazard. If risks are expressed as possibility, then the answer is in a simple yes or no; it does not quantify risks. A better expression of risks is to express it in probability how likely is something to occur. In terms of applying risks to contaminants/pollutants, if there is no connection between contaminants, receptors and exposure pathways, then there is no risk. If there is some sort of connection between contaminants, receptors and exposure pathways, then there is a risk. There is a gap between knowledge; there are things that are uncertain that need further research. Risk assessment sets default procedures for bridging gas in scientific understanding. The basic framework of risk assessment is evaluating exposure and toxicity and bringing this information together to characterize a health risk.
