EESA11H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Sepsis, Periphyton, Urinary Tract Infection
Document Summary
Lecture 6: environmental science questions: provide the basic morphological/physiological features of the diatoms and the dinoflagellates. Diatoms: major group of algea, unicellular and exist as colonies in shape or filaments, and only male gametes of centric diatoms are capable of movement by flagella. Dinoflagellates: has 2 flagella, long clusters of protein strands. Cyanobacteria are characterized as bad algae because they contain cyanobacterial toxins (naturally produced poisons) are stored in the cells of some of their species. Some of these toxins attack the liver (hepatotoxins) or the nervous system (neurotoxins). These toxins are usually released into water when the cells rupture or die. Eutrophication is the process by which a body of water becomes enriched in dissolved nutrients that stimulate the growth of aquatic plant life usually resulting in the depletion of dissolved oxygen. Nutrient input can be increased by human activities (cultural eutrophication) or can occur naturally.
