Differentiation resulted in the formation of layers. Heavy elements such as iron sank to form the core. Light elements such as silicate form the crust. Earth must have been at least partially molten. Complete melting would have allowed volatile gases to escape. Answer is found using isotope fractionation and radiogenic decay. Different isotopes tend to fractionate into different types of materials. Solids, liquids, or even different types of solids. We find that about 10% of the world"s hafnium is in the mantle, indicating core formation at about 30 million years within the formation of the earth. Moon was formed about 70 million years after the start of the solar system and formation of the earth"s core.
