Description
Lecture 05 Notes Plant earth  2nd group of rocks : source , process, product  ( Florida , Cuba )Sediments ( ion in solution , animal shells ) , deposited ( or precipitated and cemented ) , Sedimentary Rocks ( limestone )  the process is ( compaction ( fall into each other ) or cementation ( something to glue them together ) ) moving from sediments to sedimentary rock  how to name Sedimentary rocks is when they are found in  sedimentary rocks - environment of formation  sedimentary rocks are coming from other broken down bits from other rocks  Physical and chemical weathering  Physical weathering is - near surface fracturing Frost and mineral wedging , thermal expansion , Biological activity  Chemical weathering - dissolution , oxidation , Hydrolysis , Biological reactions  Clastic sediments are moved by and deposited by water , wind and glaciers  Clastic sediments named by size clay, silt, sand , pebbles, cobbles, boulders  Clastic sediments rocks are also named by granisize mudstone/shale, sandstone , conglomerate  Under microscope- rounded grains and outcrop structures - boulders  Clastic sedimentary rocks - Conglomerate, Breccia , Sandstone , Siltstone , Shale  Conglomerate ( rounded clasts) /Breccia ( angular clasts ) - sedimentary; clastic - forms from broken bits of other rocks  Stand stone - sedimentary; clastic - can form from sand moved by wind or water ( sand dunes )  Non Clastic sediments rocks ( precipitate by water or deposited by organisms ) - ( carbonate ) limestone's , ( carbonate ) Dolostone , BIF, Halite , Gypsum , Halite  Evaporates can form in shallow, Restricted basins , surrounded by fringing reefs  sea water evaporates rapidly, precipitating salts  can form minerals if water evaporates  Loose sediments - show structure , need to be lifthifed ( made into rock ) by weight of overlying sediments and cementation  Plate tectonic setting : extension ( rift ) basin and convergent basins ( which these rocks can be found in )  Have to tell about if there are bared , environment ( river ) , bedoform ( river bars ) , Deposit (
