Earth is 4. 5 billion years old and is still evolving; processes that operate on the surface of the earth a ect everyone, e. g. earthquakes, volcanoes. Environmental geoscience geological techniques to manage environmental problems, such as water contamination, groundwater, water shortage. He spent a lot of time in the eld, studied rocks and dated them, used them to gure out what was going on in the earth"s surface in the past. Stratigraphy the study of layers; rocks are usually layered and the layers tell you about what happened to the rock; this creates an order of events in earth"s history. North america is moving 3. 7cm/year towards the southwest; other places can be moving at. 25cm/year and this doesn"t seem fast but small changes over long time periods result in big changes of the earth"s surface, e. g. ontario used to be at the equator.
