Document Summary

Eesb01h3 f: lecture 10 - models of humans. The original ideas of darwin (1859) and wallace (1855) were quite simple: There must be a struggle for existence wherein only those individuals best suited to their environment survive. These simple ideas infer a number of general premises as discussed by mayr (1991) and dennett (1995): evolution: is the theory that the world is steadily changing and that organisms are transformed in time. The world is not constant, perpetually cycling, or recently created. Nature was not believed to be deterministic towards long-term trends: common descent: is the theory that every group of organisms has descended from a common ancestor. The origin of species introduced a mode of thinking that in the end was bound to transform the logic of knowledge. Darwin wrote the descent of man to clarify misinterpretations of his previous novel, by further developing his own themes.
