GGRB21H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: William Cronon, Masculism, Buda
Document Summary
William cronon reading: you have to start with an analysis of the urban if you want to understand why people are so obsessed with wilderness. The urban: everything wilderness is not: Something very socially situated (social class) group identities, race, sexual identity these are the factors that come to bear at the making of wilderness. Wilderness is fluid we think of it as everything that is not human but wilderness is fluid. That longing and desire of wanting to go somewhere warm (beach vacation example) When we look at wilderness, were basically desiring something in opposition to our everyday lives/ its about escaping. He"s trying to get us to think that the different ways in which things like desire, cultural attachments, beliefs get found up in our desires. We may want to go to the beach, but really its not about wanting to go to the beach rather its about maybe being stressed/tired.
