Document Summary
A world of households: patriarchal families, dependents: women"s and children"s subordination, regional and ethnic variations. Families were more than just relatives, they were building blocks of society and economy. The households were the main centers of economies. Most european settlers made their living in their households (e. g. Farming: slaves were part of the family . The households were male dominated: this shaped the lives of women. In colonial america, women could hardly live lives. The women were either to marry or live in her father"s house for the rest of their lives. They were not to keep up with passions. Women were hornier than men were: if there was no patriarchy, the woman was the boss of the household/property (e. g. Male dies and woman takes custody of the child (especially if the child was a girl)) Because the families were building blocks, whether they were successful or not, did not affect society if a negative way.
