Lecture 10 July 24 2014Constantinople leaves his Lateran palace to the head of the Churchthe Pope is sort of stepping into the shoes of the Roman EmperorthFrom beginning of 13 century the historical role of the Church was diminished It no longer held total universal controlThe cardinals and Pope still went to Rome and held the ceremonies for their roles But really they really didnt have total control anymore they just ruled over some principalities around the cityRome became a center of legal discussion becoming a bureaucratic center Led to development of a Code of LawNeeded finances to run all of thisLaw of the Churchcanon lawMembers of the Church went to study law at the universities before becoming PopeInnocent IIIlawyer pope St Peters Pencemoney that had to be given to the Church from the bishops to the Pope The bishops then taxed
