Document Summary
Bioc15 class 15 november 1, 2017 copyright hasenkampf 2017. Bioc15 final exam is monday dec 11th 9am-12 noon, in sy110 don"t forget it is comprehensive. Now i want to talk about a different type of chromosomal rearrangement called transposition. Transposition occurs, not by mistake, but by the directed action of certain enzymes (transposases and/or reverse transcriptases) within cells. Transposition is the movement of specific dna sequences, known as transposable elements, from one position in the genome to another position. The first observed examples of transposable elements were called jumping genes" because they jumped from one location to another. Transposable elements (te) are any segments of dna that have evolved the ability to deliberately have itself moved from one place to another place within a genome. Transposable elements likely don"t do anything specifically useful for the organism they are found in; many have no apparent cellular function except to move themselves around.
