HLTA02H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Biomedical Model, Social Medicine, Helminths
Document Summary
You can not assume in health that everyone has the same working experience in health. Three models of health to get us started: biomedical model (dominant) (social medicine) (hegemonic - same around the world , behavioural/lifestyle model (fitness, normalcy, balance) (psycho-social, social model (concerned with context of individuals) (critical societal) Largest nematode (roundworm) parasitizing the human intestine. 60,000 deaths per year mainly in children. Tends to hide outbreaks of disease in larger parts of the world: biomedical model: Reductionist : body as a machine with parts. Disease : a deviation from the norm, esp. a normal range of measurable biological variables. Positivist : influenced by scientific & expert knowledge. Has very particular rules on how we know things. Progress through advances in (medical) science & technology. Normal state > disabled state > medical intervention > normal state. Infection: lung capillaries to trachea to esophagus to small intestine with. Only looks at it from a biological perspective.
