Benefits of maple syrup:
- maple syrup has polyphenols work to inhibit the enzymes that are involved in the conversion of
carbohydrates to sugar
- has a wide variety of polyphenols; the research team identified 54 compounds in maple syrup
- Canadian syrup is 100% pure, non-refined natural product
- advisory panel to the US food and drug administration has recommended that the US food and drug
administration should do further research into the link between food colouring and childhood
hyperactivity
- they are not recommending that these products that contain dyes should have packaged warnings
- another debate in news is if whether we should continue to have fluorinated water ; Toronto health
voted on Monday to continue adding fluoride to our city water it was a 4 hours debate, many
representatives present fluoride was first added in 1963 to our water in Toronto: added as a way to
prevent tooth decay; add 0.6 mg fluoride per litre
- was a concern at this meeting that if people would push to eliminate the fluoride from the water, then
we would have a problem about tooth decay as fluorinated water reduced tooth decay by 20 40%
- such people questioned if fluoride in water really helps to prevent cavities worried that there is a toxic
effect
- If we drink too much fluorinated water, we could be susceptible to brittle bones leading to fractures:
condition known as skeletal flourosis
- The Q is how much water causes this? Around 67 glasses per day would cause this; thus, we dont have
to worry
- is there fluoride in bottled water?
- need to protect us from radioactivity which is coming from Japan (traces can show up in the food we
consume)
- The amount of radiation in the food supply from Japan is very small compared to what we would get
from natural sources everyday
- very low levels of radiation are being found in the milk in California and Washington state, but this
iodine 131 (type that was found) is apparently short-lived and decays very quickly and as a result
harmless; we are in more risk of radiation from the right radon that occurs naturally in the air or from
radon that is found in cosmic rays
- Naturally have radons: bananas, carrots, red meat
- In the US, milk, rainfall, and drink water is tested every 3 months; since the Tsunami in Japan, the
environmental protection agency has started testing more frequently
- Here in Canada, we are reassured that even though they found radioactivity in rainwater, it wont affect
our health

- US has already banned import of dairy and produce from the region of Japan where the radioactive
plant is located
- Seafood that is imported from Japan is still being sold to the US but we are told that we shouldnt worry
as they will screen for any radiation first before distributing

- A case of TB was found in St. Mary Gretty Catholic Elementary school in Scarborough
- Parents were informed of the possibility that their child would need to be tested as this child was tested
positive (so kids that has close contact with this student needs to be tested)

- issue is TB is difficult to diagnose with its symptoms : which include long lasting cough for up to at least
3 weeks, fever, night sweats, fatigue , and weight loss

- Ontario is going to be increasing its health care spending to 48 billion dollars; however, hospital are still
going to get the same increase that they received last yr. (which was a 1.5 % increase from the year
before)
- an extra 15 million dollars will be invested in the next 3 years in order to expand the program for breast
screening exams to target women between the ages of 30 and 49 who would be at risk for breast cancer
because of some pre-existing genetic factor or medical condition in their family; money will also be added
to support additional exams for women between ages of 50 to 69
- There will also be an additional investment of 93 Million dollars for the mental health and addiction
strategy for children and youth
- Community service sector will get an extra 3% funding and the community service sector oversees
homecare services and nursing services of the community
Blood Donations:
- Each year, Canadian Blood Services (CBS), the agency that manages Canada's blood system, supplies
enough blood and blood products for approximately 600,000 transfusions for a wide range of medical
conditions; these conditions include blood loss from trauma injuries, cancer, major surgeries, organ
transplants, and fractured hip/joint replacements. While relatively few risks are associated with the
process of donation, the blood that is collected can carry pathogens that will contaminate transfusion
recipients if they are not identified and eliminated from the blood supply. This risk has always existed
since advances in transfusion technology made it possible for blood to be collected, stored, and transfused
on a wide scale. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, two deadly viruses were introduced into blood supplies
worldwide - the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), a then unknown virus which causes Acquired
Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), and the Hepatitis C (HCV) virus.
- At least 6000 12 000 people are likely to die here in Canada as a result of being given blood that was
tainted with HIV
Recommendations:
- Justice Krever outlined several important principles for the new blood system: blood should remain a
public resource; donors of blood and plasma should not be remunerated for their donations, except in rare
circumstances; whole blood, plasma, and platelets must be collected in sufficient quantities in Canada to
meet domestic needs for blood components and blood products; Canadians should have free and universal
access to blood components and blood products; and safety of the blood supply system is essential.
