HLTB16H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Baby Boomers, Health Promotion, Health Professional
Document Summary
We now have an aging population and it is only going to increase over time. Baby boomers era (1940s-1970s) was after the world war and there was a lot of births. Most of the growth in canadian population is coming from immigration. The fact that we have fewer births per years and a large baby boomer population, it will have a big impact on the public health. Individuals aged 85 and older make up the fastest growing group in canada. Issues related to aging population also affect developing countries, not just developed. The risk of poor mental health increases with age. Role of public health: disease prevention and health promotion, addressing determinants of health, creating accessible environments. Vaccinations also provide immunity on a population level. As the number of people who have been vaccinated increases, the probability that a sick person comes into contact with a susceptible person decreases.
