Tool to explore, describe, understand, explain, predict, intervene (change), evaluate and assess impact. Central to advancing knowledge, theories, disciplines, practice, and social justice. Different approaches to research, depending on the purpose. Some approaches better suited to certain kinds of questions than others. Research question always precedes choice of research design and method. Design and methods must be suitable (ethical) and feasible. All research has limits rigorous research is explicit about this. A way of examining and understanding reality. Determine what is studied; how research is conducted; what methods are used; how research results are understood. Different paradigms are associated with different approaches. Reality exists beyond our perceptions; but it can be meaningfully conceptualized and measured. Concerned with facts, not the subjective or values.
