Ethical theories: deontological: actions are right or wrong based on values and morals. Physician refusing to prescribe placebo medication to hypochondriac patient even though it will make them feel better: consequentialism: the opposite of deontological. The results of the action determine if it is right or wrong: ex. Physician lying to family members that their loved one passed peacefully and did not suffer to ease family"s pain. Therefore, they know that telling the truth is not going to be helpful, so might as well lie: utilitarian (social service model): form of consequentialism. Fundamental principles of bioethics: autonomy respect for individuals right to make their own decisions, beneficience: the duty to help or do good , non-maleficence: the duty to prevent harm or not do bad . Principles of bioethics: principles of bioethics may seem straight forward and easy to follow.
