2012-02-13 HLTC02H3 S Lecture 5 (4): Human Rights and Political Economy Social Determinants of Women’s Health Assignment: Looking at the output variables of gender, race, and class and doing a gender analysis and how these variables interact. Applying gender analysis to cardiovascular disease for women, incidence, and how it affects women in different racial class and SES. What is discussed for CVD for women and men; discuss how gender analysis can influence whether people develop CVD and what public policies can help reduce CVD in women and what directions can public policy makers take to reduce inequalities and also the incidence of CVD in women. DO NOT LOOK AT GENDER-BASED ANALYSIS! The focus as in the first assignment should be on gender/diversity analysis (or intersectional analysis). -Metcalfe Foundation Lecture: • Research that has been carried before 2-3 decades ago was focused on men’s health research analyses • Does not take into account the labour that women do for the family and does not account into health outcomes and policy o EBM takes away recognition of the broader context for women’s health issue • Positivism o Scientific method o Rational o Objective o Quantitative analysis  See this as male constructs and does not capture women’s lived experiences and constructs • Eg. Male only research samples when looking at research as how women experience heart attacks and symptoms for heart attacks differently; fundamental differences  Focus on what can be seen and measured • Research bias between the two genders; focus on treatment for men more than women (disenfranchisement) • Focus on the biomedical model and looking for evidence in relation to disease and illness • Biological essentialism and gender blindness associated w/ EBM • Human Rights o Political and civil rights: right to life, Freedom of opinion, fair trial o Protection from torture and violence o Economic, social, and cultural rights –i.e. right to work, social protection, adequate standard of living o Highest possible standards of physical and mental health, education, enjoyment of benefits of cultural freedom and scientific progress  Social and physical barriers of inequalities should not hinder access of resources o Human rights Principles  Universal inherence  Inalienability  Inherent self-worth of each individual  Autonomy and self-determination  Equality for all  Preservation of freedom of individual through social support • Not transferable rights • Protecting people from poverty • Optimal standards of living • Good mental health outcomes o Necessary for governments to remove those barriers to human rights principles • Elements of the Right to Health o The right to health is an inclusive right o The right to health contains freedoms o The right to health contains entitlements o Health services, goods, and facilities must be provided to all w/o any discrimination o All services, goods, and facilities must be available, accessible, acceptable and of good quality  People are entitled to not being tortured  Important for governments to ensure that people have good social and health well-being  People need to be free from any form of discrimination • CEDAW Impact Report- Canada o Canadian governments have failed to provide:  Child care  Affordable housing  Shelters for victims of domestic violence  Legal aid for low income individuals • Feminist Political Economy (Critical Social Science Theory) o Liberalism and Marxism, and Weber (status, class, and power) o Politics and economics are related o A study of the whole of society cannot be understood separately from the study of its individual parts o States, markets, ideas (political ideology), discourses and civil society are interrelated o Distribution of political power and social and economic resources in society • Feminist Political Economy II o “gender shapes, and is shaped by conditions, practices, and relations of markets of power, and of inequality… also well how gender intersects w/other locations.”  Critical Perspectives on health, illness, and health care • Overview of Social Determinants of Health o Neoliberalism= the dominance of markets  Does affect the quality of care that is delivered • Disadvantage and health: Academic Perspectives • What are Social Determinants of Health o Economic and social conditions influence the health of individuals, commu
