Document Summary

Mental illness canada: mental illness affects almost everyone in our society. Some of us will be personally affected by it, whether it is due to our own illness, or watching someone very dear to us have to experience it, first hand. It is estimated that more than 20% of individuals will experience mild to severe forms of depression and/or anxiety. Everyone is affected to some degree by stress, losses, life challenges and other difficult experiences. However, there is an ongoing stigma associated with many of these problems, which also compromises the ability for those people that require assistance, from often seeking treatment. In canada, mental health, like health in general, is a provincial responsibility. Each province, therefore, is developing its response to the problems of mental health relative to its own circumstances. Despite this, mental health policy in all jurisdictions is developing within the health promotion framework and consequently is characterized by a number of common themes and trends.
