Document Summary

Lecture 6: complex traits: variation in body morphology. Takes into account: accommodates dental development until early adulthood, nasal opening, space in brain, mastication and dental arches. Adult cranium form: strong resemblances among family members, populations share some similarities. However, there is more variation within a population than across populations. Of special interest because it houses the brain. However, thought that cranial characteristics were indicators of behavioural attributes (i. e. cesare lombroso) Anders retzius: the cephalic index = maximum breadth/ maximum length. Broad range: long and narrow short and broad (70-90) Certain populations tend to one end of the range, however broad range and similarities between disparate groups. Result of growth rate and body size: taller individuals have longer heads. Influenced by environment: larger heads in immigrant american children, colder climates: rounder heads, less surface-to-volume ratio = less heat dissipation. 450cc earliest hominids to average of 1345 cc in humans (highly variable) 100-200 cc variation around the mean within populations.
