LINC28 – Lecture 5  Language Change • Apparent time – compare older speakers with younger speakers versus real time­ when  you follow speakers from when they were kids to when they grow up (rare) • Intervention – you interfere with language. i.e. used to have Mr. instead of Mrs. And  miss. o Wasn’t inclusive so it had to be changed  • Variationists sociolinguistics – look at sociolinguistic variables in relation to macro social  variable (i.e. age, SES) • Descriptive vs. prescriptive  o Prescriptive – tells you what to do (i.e. language manuals) • Variationists sociolinguists treat gender as an independent social variable o Relates to speech community
