Idsa01: lecture 5 decolonization, the cold war and modernization. Practices and tools of development build on: colonial era relationships, perceptions, attitude, policies and practices. The institutional apparatus of colonialism persists in developmental states. The structures of difference that persist in development were produced through colonialism. Representations of people and place as incapable. Colonialism and development both rely on ideologies of modernity and progress. Power of western dominated network of development institutions (world bank, imf, un conventions, etc. ) The end of empire & decolonization: explanations: how do we explain this epochal change in world politics, note latin american exception, allies to stop nazi imperialism. Ally victory discredited idea of empire troops included imperial subjects": economics of empire, metropole weakened by war, over-extension: colonizers could not maintain colonies, changed modes of production made colonies less profitable. Emancipation movement and struggle for liberty and self-determination. 2: nationalism, public opinion started to become opposed to colonialism, resistance and weapons of the weak .
