Lecture 2 note: a brief history of sustainable development. Over time civilization through unsustainable resource usage. A lot of the decline had to do with agricultural practices and climate change. Tree rings were used to seehow climate changed happened and affected a civilization. Kuznets curve: specific relationship b/w inequality (y-axis) and economic development (x-axis_ Should have inverted u shape graph: genie co-efficient: used to indicate how equal the wealth distribution is. Higher= not equal: environmental kuznets curve is where income is x axis and some form of enviro degradation on y-axis. Diff is that it can be chopped up into 3 diff stages. 3rd: post- industrial economies still growing but not reliant on damaging environment processes. Implications of this pattern: the inverted u shape pattern has only been shown in very few situations, richer is cleaner . It is only truly sustainable if you fulfill all 3 sections: social, environmental, economic.
