Document Summary
Alternative media defined in contrasts to traditional media: instead of hierarchy there is a new model, power is defused, distributed horizontally rather than vertically. Low cost restricts access: because only certain people from certain demographics, with a certain level of income and free time can actually take on the mantle of being unpaid journalists, on the other side are citizen journalists. News consumption: grazing, skimming, cross-platform, cross-outlet. Newspaper competing against each to keep their readers and ratings: convergence, repositioning. Scarcity as editing function: limited space and time, multiple reports and sources, inverted pyramid style (event based style) Done so editor can cut the end but still have a story if they run out of. Alternative media characteristics space or time: de-professionalization, de-institutionalization, de-capitalization. Canada-land by jessie brown, crowd funded independent media outlet by a professional journalist. Scarcity as objectivity: scarcity of media space. Media space for news was very small: high threshold of entry for news, obligation for objectivity/impartiality.
