LINA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Tenseness, Diphthong, Alveolar Ridge
Document Summary
Phonetics: the study of the physical properties of speech sounds. Phonology: the study of the mental representation of speech sounds. How sounds are produced in the vocal tract. Physical properties of sounds themselves (sound waves) Ambiguity: no one-to-one correspondence between symbols and sounds. English alphabet does not have symbols for many of the sounds in other languages. We have air in our lungs and pushes through out g then it pushes through our oral or nasal cavity. Allows one-to-one correspondence between symbols and sounds. Allows one system to represent the similar and different sounds of all human languages. In order to produce speech sound you need three things: Our the oral cavity (mouth) (sometimes out the nasal cavity-nose) Form the center (nucleus) of a syllable. Consonants: some form of obstruction of air created by the articulators. (ex tongue and the roof of the mouth) Whether the vocal cords vibrate or not: voicing.
