Linguistic is the scientific study of human language. We study language to understand the nature of human mind. Every language has systematic pattern and rules that is what linguists study. Do not end the sentence with a preposition: to boldly go where no one has gone before, to go boldly where no one has gone before. Attempt to legislate how people write or talk. It is the rules of a language that are dictated by society as correct . These ways of speaking that are not often quite natural to us. Prescriptive rules are how the people should speak. Mental grammar is in our heads, which is shared by speakers of language, is called linguistic competence. A model of this grammar is called descriptive grammar. Terminology: knowledge of language = linguistic competence = mental grammar, model of the mental grammar = linguist"s grammar. Communication (verbal and non verbal) relies on one thing standing for something else is called sign.
