Knowing a language = being able to speak, and be understood by others who know that language, knowing what sounds that exist in that language, knowing the words in that language, know grammar and structure of language. Linguistic knowledge is unconscious; ex. you just know that some sentence is not correct but don"t exactly know why; you cant access/see it. Competence = unconscious linguistic knowledge that exists in the head of the native speaker; abstract/cant see it: ex. he/she has the competence. Performance = how the speaker actually uses his linguistic competence to produce and understand speech. Ex. when you are nervous (=external factors), it can affect your performance; but you still have the competence. Grammar (in this course) = knowledge about that language.
