Document Summary
Note: anything that is not written on the lecture slides will be bolded and italicized in these notes. The prof gave us two sheets to practise. One is the diagram of the vocal tract which can also be seen in the tutorial exercise. This diagram will be posted by the prod on quercus after tutorial. The other sheet is the ipa chart which will be posted in these notes. Answer: speech sounds can be differentiated from each other by how the air stream is affected as it goes from the lungs up and out of the mouth (which we"ll consider in the following weeks). Voicing: whether the vocal folds are vibrating or not during production of the sound. The air passing through forces the vocal cords to vibrate, causing a voiced sound: voicing: some consonants are voiced and some consonants are voiceless.
