LINA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Vocal Tract, Phonetics, Calibri
Document Summary
Mental grammar has 5 major components: 1 of them is phonetics which is what"s covered in this lecture. Phonetics is about sounds: there are 2 approaches: Atriculatory: how you use different organs to produce different sounds. There is no correspondence between sounds and spelling. E. g. the word enough has 6 words and we hear 4 sounds (e uh- nu- fuh). E. g. the word knee has 4 letters and 2 sounds. Since there is no correspondence with sound and words, linguists made a new alphabet system called ipa. This is used so everyone can understand words from all languages. It"s an international alphabet that can be understood by everyone. One symbol is used for one sound and this aids in people learning different languages as it is used to indicate the pronunciation of words. One of the reasons why we need an ipa is because some words have the same spelling but different sounds.
