Morphology: the study of the internal structure of words and the rules/processes by which words are formed what do speakers know about the words of their language? . If you know a word, you know its form (pronunciation) and its meaning: the relationship between form and meaning is arbitrary. Speakers generally know form, meaning and part of speech (lexical category): they can tell the difference between: i walked (verb); i went for a walk (noun); *a walk path (adj. ) We can figure out the meanings of new words because we know which pieces go together and which can"t: ex. We also know the lexical category of words not in our lexicon ex. *legalizability: adults know 40 000-60 000 words, 6 year-olds know 13 000. Note: a phoneme is the smallest linguistic unit that causes a difference in meaning. A morpheme is the smallest linguistic unit with meaning or grammatical function ex. Can combine to form complex (multi-morphemic) words.
