Document Summary

Slide 4: linear order matter for the meaning of the sentences. Grouping of words how they form hierarchical matter too. Sentence are not linear string of word: each word form a grouping called phrases, each phrases form a grouping called sentences. Phrase structure (ps) rules = general rules for representing the internal structure of sentences. Phrase structure (ps) tress = a tree diagram representing the internal structure of a specific sentence. Constituent = a syntactic unit in a ps tree: a group of word that goes together. Relationship between rules and tree: category on the left expands to the categories on the right. A b (c) = shorthand for 2 rules: can generate 2 trees. 2nd: b has to be on the left of c. Optionality: a category inside parentheses is optional, a category which is not in parenthesis is required, this will correspond to word order. Even if something is optional the order matters.
