Document Summary

Linb09 lecture 8 acoustic iii: consonants & suprasegmentals. *the diagrams in this lecture note is directly from the powerpoint. Use of pitch at a phrasal level. Used for more complex meaning differences such as: questions/commands/statements, contrast/topic/focus, doubt, politeness, annoyance, surprise, boredom. Segments organized into divisions, based on sonority and phonotactics (rules governing syllable shape) Many phonological rules make reference to syllables and speakers can usually count syllables in their language easily. Sonority: syllables can often be defined by peaks in sonority, sonority curves. Hypothetically, the peaks on these curves indicate where syllable nuclei are. Means that onset clusters should have rising sonority and coda clusters have falling sonority. However, it fails for /s/ in english. Lthough it"s mo e sono ous, /s/ may appea in onsets and codas in ways that don"t espect the sono ity hie a chy. Cross-linguistic variability in syllables: phonotactics restrictions vary from language to language. A few languages have cv-only syllables.
