LINB09H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Hightone Records, Spaced, Formant
Document Summary
Lecture 7 acoustics ii: vowels and suprasegmentals. Good temporal resolution: can see individual glottal pulses; easier to see formants. F1 and f2 are correlated with the size of the cavity in the vocal tract. Spectrograms of different vowels are distinguished by formants shape. F1 is inversely correlated with height: higher vowel = lower f1. F2 is inversely correlated with backness: backer vowel = lower f2. Note: monophthongs usually have steady-state formants; diphthongs have sloping formants. To determine which diphthong is which, first split them up into those ending with /j/ and those ending with /w/. Better indicator note that both 1, 3, 5 slope up. F2 rising means the vowel is getting more front aj, ej, j. 3 has little drop in f1, f2 more compared to 1 (therefore is further back) j. 1 has more drop in f1 and starts higher (therefore lower vowel): aj. 2 has higher f1 therefore lower vowel: aw.
