PLIC24H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Baby Talk, Babbling, Speech Perception
Document Summary
Friction is hard for them, there isnt a specific place of articulation. When trasncriving will be ethe nd content word probably theta. There are sonorants / obstruents (come in pairs) Habituation - when babies hear sound repeated they become bored (habituated) Dishabituation = baby can discriminate a new sound. Cant tell when baby is not dishabituating or simply not interested -> averaging across babies. Older babies are not interested in has, especially if no reward. The syllable may be the basic unit of infant speech perception. Not just hearing a phone but hearing it as a syllable. Babies react to a change in a syllable (2 changes, dental d and differnet vowel) There isnt a bigger spike when 2 things are changed. If u pause at the wrong time baby wont react, they are atuned to phrase boundaries and syllables. Though the statistical process they will figure out when the phrase begings and ends.
