Low frequency words are 7-9 letters long: high frequency words are 5-7 letters long. Longer rts may be as a result of word length and now frequency. Between subjects design: each participant experiences only one treatment of the independent variable. Within subjects design: each participant experiences all treatments of the independent variable. We often need to arbitrarily segment continuous variables. On-line measures: give access to the processes as they unfold: reading times, decision latencies, fixation durations. Off-line measures: give us access to the end product of the process: grammaticality judgements, sentence completion types. Ideally, we manipulate our iv and hold all other variables constant.
