As we age our ability to perceive contrasts non existent in our target language declines. Kikuya infant, lacks /pa/ still able to differentiate pa/ba sounds. Zulu clicks - not all contrasts are lost. Not all contrasts are present a birth na/nya. 2 hypothesis - structure changing vs structure adding. This is in support of the structure changing hypoethesis. Different between prototype and non ptototype for nonnative categories, less different for native categories. Prorotypical vowel - usually sits in the middle of the distribution (might not evne exist) however it satisfies all the characteristics. This is a version of structure changing prorotype. U wont be sensetive to accoustic diffences and u will label it as that category. U have an existing category, even if the sounds deviated, u wil still perceive it as the same category. If ur from a language with +/- aspiration u will be sensetive to the difference, because u have no prototypical vowel to map this on.
