MDSA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: The German Ideology, Marxism, Ruling Class
Read textbook for details: names, key figues/terms/aspects/people, timeline of events. Read supplemental readings for ideas: examples/applications of theories, theoretical lens established in textbook -> sup. Study guides will specify which details to focus on. Take notes as you read: summarize/paraphrase + isolate key points. Theories will be presented -> not advocated for: all theories/lenses have their limitations -> lens magnifies and obscures. > philosophical marxism -> ruling class makes the ruling ideas -> what images of success/wealth/power/prosperity/happiness do they give us? (largely materialistic) What do they show us vs. what is obscured. Mdsa01 important to us: basically use money to create norms in society. If you control the media, you get to generate the norms: coming from a capitalist society, marxism makes sense -> money is important in both. The mode of production (i. e. , our economic relations) is the base or the determinant element of our thoughts: ex: labour, economic exchanges (consumers) -> economic conditions influence ideas.
