• Newsroom culture + politics
o Journalism is difficult, w/ low$$$
o What is journalism
▪ Gather + present useful info to public
• Fluid, changes over time, dependent on newsroom
availability
▪ (values) have an unbias perspective
• Not realistic bc your choices to report on something is
guided by some form of politics
• Youre always making decisions as a journalist
▪ Gatekeepers, watchdogs
▪ Part of the public convo/forum (Habermas)
• Public sphere; rational convo
▪ The “truth” = arbitrary
▪ Loyalty to citizens sometimes you’re loyal to editors/company
than to citizens
