MGMD02H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Observational Error, Spring Break, Colonoscopy
Document Summary
Video camera analogy: memory can be likened to a video camera in the brain that records material as it occurs. When we need to retrieve it later, we simply play back the recording. Storage chest analogy: memory can be likened to a storage chest in the brain into which we deposit material and form which we can withdraw it later if needed. Occasionally, something gets lost from the chest , and then we say we have forgotten. Memory: a summary: memory is fallible, not just random error, but systematic bias: Some parts of the experience are remembered better than others: peak & end matter more than beginning and (especially) duration: if video camera was rolling, every part of the memory should have equal experience. Planting false memory using different words in describing an accident: shows that it"s easy to create false memories. Language that we use can shape public policy/response: synomn with each other but can have profound impact.
