Document Summary

Four major mechanisms by which heat can be exchanged between animal and its environment: dry heat transport. Conduction: direct transfer of heat between animal and environment (two physical bodies. Convective heat loss: heat loss to moving stream of air or water. Radiation: transfer of heat between two physical bodies that are not in direct contact. Liquid becomes gas (heat loss: release of energy in form of heat (exothermic reaction) Rate of dry heat transfer is proportional to t (body) t (ambient) Poikilothermy: body temperature fluctuates with environment, usually associated with ectothermy. Homeothermy: body temperature remains constant, usually associated with endothermy. It"s environment is at a thermally stable temperature: so the body temperature doesn"t change, does not have the capacity to metabolise heat. They keep their body temperature constant at different levels depending on the seasons or time of day: when heterotherms hibernate, they keep their body temperature at a lower degree but still derive heat from metabolic reactions.
