Document Summary
January 11, 2018: act in a way that is properly responsive to the demands of normative values and ideals, there is probably no perfect general way of thinking about the right thing to do in ever context. But we might start with a kind of very abstract way of think about rational conduct. Note that this is not a maximizing conception: rational conduct is not necessarily a matter of maximizing anything (though it could be). Rational conduct involves a responsiveness to normative demands, where these demands could involve performing the action that maximizes some value or function, but could also involve performing an action that conforms to some rule. Self-love/self-respect: loving yourself too much or not enough, helps us to decide how we should live our lives, self-love is an ideal we should all love ourselves. But it can be hard to live up to this ideal.
